Interstate 820: Fort Worth ~ Texas

Interstate 820: Fort Worth ~ Texas | Drive America

Explore the complete loop of Fort Worth’s beltway as we drive 31 miles west along Interstate 820, the loop that encircles most of the city. Starting on the southeast side of Fort Worth at its southern junction with Interstate 20, we immediately begin a northbound stretch that parallels the eastern edge of the metro. Early in the drive, we cross the interchange with U.S. Route 287, a major route that provides connections east toward Waxahachie and west toward Decatur. As we continue, State Highway 303 (Rosedale Street) intersects our route, a corridor that leads into the heart of Fort Worth’s East Side neighborhoods. Pressing northeast, IH-820 next intersects Interstate 30, a key east-west route between Fort Worth and Dallas. This marks one of the more complex sections of the loop, where multiple major highways converge in a dense suburban area.

North of I-30, the beltway straightens out and heads into the northeastern suburbs, including North Richland Hills and Haltom City. These communities blend suburban living with easy access to Fort Worth’s urban core, and IH-820 serves as a lifeline for daily commuters. Along this stretch, we intersect SH-121 west, which leads to the nearby Fort Worth Stockyards and Meacham International Airport. Soon after, we swing westward at the junction with Texas State Highway 183, transitioning from the eastern leg to the northern arc of the loop. Passing the interchange with U.S. Route 377, we’re briefly enveloped in tree-lined neighborhoods before re-entering Fort Worth proper. Here, Interstate 35W—one of the city’s major north-south thoroughfares—slices through the beltway. This is a major connection point for traffic heading toward Denton to the north or Burleson to the south.

After crossing I-35W, the loop begins to arc southwest as we pass through Lake Worth, both the city and the lake itself. SH-199, also known as Jacksboro Highway, provides quick access into the western Fort Worth neighborhoods or out toward the small towns and ranchland west of the metroplex. The interchange with SH-199 signals our approach to the scenic segment where IH-820 crosses the shimmering waters of Lake Worth, offering brief but pleasant views of the lake and surrounding greenery. From there, the highway curves south into White Settlement, a small but growing suburb just west of the city. This area is home to attractions like the Texas Civil War Museum and Flight Deck Trampoline Park, as well as a portion of the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth. Finally, we reach the southwestern corner of the loop where Interstate 30 reappears, signaling the end of our journey around the western portion of Fort Worth’s beltway. While the full loop of IH-820 extends further, this 31-mile segment offers a comprehensive view of Fort Worth’s suburban sprawl, major interchanges, and the local landscape.

Note: The intro card incorrectly states this route was 69 or so miles. That is incorrect. The actual milage on this route was 31.1 miles.
