Cruising down Arkansas Highway 9 from Morrilton to Oppelo might not be a long journey—clocking in at just 5 miles—but it’s a scenic little connector full of rural charm and small-town character. This short stretch gives us a taste of the Arkansas River Valley’s blend of natural beauty and farmland, along with easy access to some of the area’s more prominent recreational spots.
Our drive begins at the interchange with U.S. Route 64 on the southeast side of Morrilton, a historic town with a charming downtown and plenty of Ozark foothill flavor. This part of Morrilton sits near the Arkansas River, and almost immediately after leaving the interchange, Highway 9 takes us across that very river via a steel through-truss bridge. The crossing offers great views of the river and its surrounding woodlands, especially in early spring or fall when the colors are just right. It’s also worth noting that nearby to the west, though not visible from the road, is the Arkansas River Lock & Dam No. 9 and the accompanying Riverview Recreation Area—a popular local spot for fishing, boating, and riverside picnicking.
Once over the river, AR-9 takes a brief turn westward, skimming through rich agricultural land. This is classic Arkansas River Valley farmland: flat, fertile, and dotted with irrigation systems and grain silos. It’s not uncommon to see tractors at work or the occasional crop duster overhead. This open stretch adds a peaceful, pastoral rhythm to the drive.
The road bends south again just before entering the small town of Oppelo, a community of just under 800 people. Here, AR-9 becomes Broadway Street, the town’s main thoroughfare. Despite its size, Oppelo serves as a gateway to some noteworthy outdoor destinations. Just a few miles west is Petit Jean State Park, one of the most beloved parks in Arkansas, and the road we’re on will soon intersect with Arkansas Highway 154, the main route up Petit Jean Mountain. That’s where this short drive comes to an end—at the junction with AR-154 on the southern edge of Oppelo.
While this five-mile segment may seem modest, it plays a vital role in connecting travelers between Morrilton, the Petit Jean area, and points further south. Whether you’re using it as a link in a larger road trip or just exploring the area, Arkansas Highway 9 between Morrilton and Oppelo offers both practicality and a pleasant bit of scenery.
