Arkansas Highway 8: Glenwood to Amity

Arkansas Highway 8: Glenwood to Amity | Drive America

Join us as we travel a short but scenic stretch of Arkansas Highway 8, covering just under 7 miles between Glenwood and Amity in western Arkansas. This peaceful drive showcases the quieter side of the state, where the Ouachita foothills meet rural farmland and old railroad towns. The route may be brief, but it offers a glimpse into the everyday beauty of Pike County—and a few interesting sights along the way.

Our journey begins in Glenwood, at the intersection of AR-8 and U.S. Route 70, a major east-west corridor in this part of Arkansas. Glenwood is a small but active town known for its proximity to the Caddo River and Ouachita National Forest, both popular with paddlers, hikers, and outdoor lovers. Before heading out, it’s worth checking out the historic Glenwood Iron Mountain Railroad Depot, a local landmark that harkens back to the town’s early days as a railroad stop.

Heading southeast out of Glenwood, Highway 8 quickly transitions from town to countryside. The road follows a gentle two-lane path through rolling terrain dotted with pastures, pine forests, and scattered homes. This stretch is typical of Arkansas backroads—low traffic, lots of greenery, and plenty of wide views. Though there aren’t many formal attractions along the highway itself, the peaceful setting makes it a great drive for those seeking a relaxed pace.

As we near Amity, the scenery begins to show hints of the town’s layout, with more homes and the occasional side road hinting at nearby neighborhoods. Right before reaching the town center, Highway 8 intersects Arkansas Highway 84, which heads east toward Bismarck and Hot Springs, making this a notable junction for local travelers. After the intersection, Highway 8 turns due east and becomes Thompson Street, easing into Amity’s small downtown.

Amity is a quiet town with a population under a thousand, but it holds onto a charming town-square layout. As we enter town, we pass a mix of local businesses, residences, and civic buildings. The route ends at a compact roundabout near the town square, marking the heart of Amity. Though small, the square area is worth a walk around if you’re into local history—there are often plaques, old storefronts, and a strong sense of community identity.

This drive from Glenwood to Amity is perfect for anyone exploring the region’s backroads or making a connection to more scenic routes deeper in the Ouachitas. Whether you’re headed east toward DeGray Lake or just enjoying a lazy weekend drive, this short route reminds us that even the smallest stretches of highway can offer something memorable.
