Arkansas Highway 144: Lake Village to Lake Chicot State Park

Arkansas Highway 144: Lake Village to Lake Chicot State Park | Drive America

Leaving the busy U.S. Route 65 behind in Lake Village, we turn east onto Arkansas Highway 144 — a short but scenic route that offers a relaxing detour along the western and northern edges of Lake Chicot. This 8-mile drive takes us through the heart of Arkansas Delta country, blending small-town charm, rich natural beauty, and direct access to one of the state’s most tranquil state parks.

The journey begins in Lake Village, a community known for its position along Lake Chicot — North America’s largest oxbow lake and a favorite for anglers and birdwatchers. Right at the start, the route intersects with AR-153, where we make a gentle turn north. This is where the real charm begins. For the next few miles, Highway 144 hugs the lake’s west bank, offering glimpses of cypress trees rising from still waters and the occasional boat gliding through the shallows. As we pass through the edge of Lake Village, the road feels more rural, with scattered homes, fishing piers, and a backdrop of shimmering water.

Continuing north, we reach the junction with Arkansas Highway 257 — a key route in and out of the Lake Chicot area. At this point, AR-144 veers east and enters the unincorporated community of Luna. There’s not much in terms of development here, but what Luna lacks in amenities, it makes up for in peacefulness. This stretch of road is quiet and perfect for spotting herons or catching the golden hue of late afternoon sun glinting off the lake. As we roll eastward, we stay within earshot of rustling reeds and lapping waves, following the natural curve of the oxbow lake.

The drive ends at the entrance to Lake Chicot State Park, located just beyond a second intersection with AR-257. This state park is a prime destination for outdoor recreation — from camping and kayaking to fishing and wildlife photography. With its combination of lakeside views, picnic spots, and visitor-friendly amenities, it’s a worthy stop for anyone touring southeastern Arkansas. Whether you’re making this trip to set up camp, enjoy a day on the water, or simply admire the views, Arkansas Highway 144 delivers a peaceful, lakeside drive that showcases the Delta’s slower rhythm and natural beauty.
