Tennessee Route 22: Shiloh National Military Park to Crump

Tennessee Route 22: Shiloh National Military Park to Crump | Drive America

Join us as we cruise north for about 5 miles along Tennessee Route 22, connecting the hallowed grounds of Shiloh National Military Park with the small river town of Crump. This short but meaningful stretch in southwest Tennessee gives us a moment to appreciate the region’s deep Civil War history while easing back into modern life along the Tennessee River’s western banks.

Our journey kicks off right at the entrance to Shiloh National Military Park. This park preserves one of the Civil War’s most significant battlefields and draws visitors from across the country to walk among its rolling fields, cannons, and memorials. Before we merge onto TN-22, it’s worth taking the time to explore the park’s visitor center, cemetery, and well-marked trails that recount the fierce fighting of 1862.

Leaving the park behind, we head north on TN-22 through gently undulating countryside that’s quintessentially rural Tennessee—thick tree lines, scattered homesteads, and quiet side roads beckon to the east and west. This part of the drive is peaceful and relatively undisturbed, serving as a short transition between historic ground and the slightly busier crossroads at Crump.

A couple miles in, we cross paths with local routes that link to small communities and farmlands tucked away from the main road. There’s not much commercial traffic here, so the drive remains smooth and calm. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the tree lines, especially early in the morning or around dusk.

We roll into Crump just before reaching the junction with U.S. Highway 64, where local eateries and a few gas stations cater to travelers and locals alike. Crump sits near the Tennessee River, making it a popular stop for boaters, fishermen, and those exploring the river’s scenic spots. From here, it’s an easy hop east or west on US-64 or a quick detour south back toward the historic battlefield if you want to soak up more history before heading out.

Whether you’re a Civil War buff, a casual Sunday driver, or someone looking for a pleasant backroad to connect two small Tennessee towns, this leg along Tennessee Route 22 provides a short but memorable slice of the state’s story.
