Interstate 57: Bald Knob to Searcy

If you’ve ever driven through the heart of central Arkansas, you know that the stretch from Bald Knob to Searcy packs more character than its modest mileage might suggest. Today, we’re heading south for about 9 miles along Interstate 57—formerly part of the historic U.S. 67 corridor—taking in a mix of rural charm, small-town Americana, and glimpses of Arkansas’s natural beauty. Whether you’re a local commuter, a road tripper making your way toward Little Rock, or just chasing a bit of nostalgia on the old “Rock ‘n’ Roll Highway,” this drive is worth a closer look.

We kick off our route at the Bald Knob interchange, where U.S. 167 splits from Interstate 57/U.S. 67. Bald Knob itself is a classic Arkansas railroad town, and if you have a little extra time, the Bald Knob National Wildlife Refuge and the old Missouri-Pacific Railroad Depot are both just a short detour away. As we merge onto I-57 heading south, keep your eyes peeled for Bald Knob Lake Road—your gateway to quiet fishing holes, birdwatching, and a break from the hum of highway traffic. As we cruise out of town, the surroundings quickly shift to open farmland dotted with small creeks and patches of timber, giving you a real taste of the White County countryside.

As we approach Judsonia, you’ll notice the highway bending southwest. Judsonia is a small community that’s flown under the radar for years, but history buffs might appreciate a quick exit to check out the historic Judsonia Bridge—a rare swing bridge over the Little Red River, just a couple miles east of the freeway. Back on the mainline, the route gently curves as we skirt the eastern edge of Searcy, with roadside views that hint at both the agricultural roots and the growing suburban sprawl of this college town.

Entering Searcy from the northeast, the city’s skyline is modest but unmistakable, marked by water towers and the distant outline of Harding University’s campus. If you’re hungry for more than just scenery, Searcy’s downtown offers up local eats, antique shops, and small-town hospitality just minutes off the interstate. We end our southbound run at the busy interchange with U.S. 67 Business (Eastline Road), a common access point for Searcy’s business district, shopping, and emergency services—fitting, since our video wraps up with an unexpected emergency stop.

Along this nine-mile drive, you’re riding on pavement that’s seen everything from cross-country tourists to the rise of Arkansas’s local music legends, thanks to its long history as part of U.S. 67. While the official signs now say “Interstate 57,” this route still serves as a vital connector for residents, truckers, and travelers alike. If you’re into roadside history or just enjoy a smooth, quick drive through changing landscapes, you’ll find plenty to appreciate here.
