Interstate 64: Lexington to Frankfort - Kentucky | Drive America

Looking for a classic slice of the Bluegrass State? Let’s hop on Interstate 64 and cruise from Lexington to Frankfort, covering roughly 21 miles of rolling Kentucky landscape. Whether you’re a local commuter, a road tripper heading toward Louisville, or just in it for the scenery, this stretch of I-64 has something for everyone.

Our drive kicks off in Lexington, merging onto I-64 from southbound I-75—right in the heart of Kentucky’s second-largest city. As we leave the city limits, the suburban bustle quickly melts into wide-open fields and signature horse farms. There’s no mistaking you’re in thoroughbred country; watch for those classic white-fenced pastures and maybe even a few horses grazing as you pass. Heading northwest, we soon reach the interchange with U.S. Highway 62. This area is dotted with small communities and, if you look northward, the region is packed with historic distilleries—Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve aren’t far from the route if you’re planning a side trip.

Continuing west, I-64 gently curves past the charming town of Midway, renowned for its railroad heritage and picturesque downtown. Midway itself is just south of the interstate and worth a visit if you’re looking to stretch your legs or grab a bite—think cozy cafes and antique shops set in restored 19th-century buildings. Just past Midway, you’ll cross the interchange with U.S. Highway 421, which leads north toward Georgetown or south back toward Lexington.

As we roll into the home stretch, the terrain shifts to more wooded hills as we approach the Frankfort area. Keep your eyes peeled—this stretch includes a crossing over the Kentucky River, offering sweeping views of the river valley and forested bluffs on either side. The entrance to Frankfort is marked by the busy interchange with U.S. Highway 60, which is also a main route for folks heading downtown or exploring the state capital.

Our journey wraps up at the U.S. 127 interchange, right on the outskirts of Frankfort. If you have time, you can hop off here to explore Kentucky’s historic capital—tour the Old State Capitol, stroll the downtown riverfront, or check out the Capitol grounds, which are just a short drive from the exit. The area around Frankfort is known for its bourbon, history, and natural beauty, so it’s worth sticking around if your schedule allows.
