Tucked away in the Boston Mountains, Arkansas Highway 74 offers a short but classic slice of Ozark driving for anyone passing through Winslow. On this run, we cover about 6 miles from the eastern edge of Winslow westward to its connection with Interstate 49 — a tight, twisty stretch that locals know well for its switchbacks and wooded slopes.
We kick off our journey turning west onto AR-74 from U.S. Highway 71, right on the outskirts of Winslow’s small but storied downtown. Within minutes, the road threads through the community, rolling gently past a scattering of old homes and local driveways, before we tackle the first big curve: a steep, signature switchback that sweeps us south and up the hillside. This bend alone makes the drive worth a look, especially when the leaves are ablaze in autumn or after a fresh snow coats the pines.
Once we’ve climbed above town, Highway 74 straightens out a bit, bending north along a ridge for a couple of miles. Here, it’s just us, the forest, and the occasional break in the trees revealing glimpses of the rugged Boston Mountains that define this pocket of northwest Arkansas. It’s not uncommon to spot deer along the roadside or catch a hawk soaring above the ridgeline — so we keep an eye out and take it slow through the blind curves.
After passing the intersection with County Road 39, we swing west one last time for about three miles of classic Ozark two-lane: tight corners, gentle climbs, and dense woods hugging both shoulders. It’s peaceful but engaging — exactly what backroad Arkansas does best. Finally, the forest opens as we approach the I-49 interchange, where Highway 74 ends its run for now, seamlessly connecting local mountain traffic with the faster flow of interstate travelers heading north toward Fayetteville or south toward Fort Smith.
