Arizona Route 64: Tusayan to the Grand Canyon

Take a scenic ride to the edge of one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders as we follow Arizona Route 64 from the gateway town of Tusayan into the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. This short but memorable 6-mile drive introduces travelers to the dramatic high desert landscape of northern Arizona, setting the stage for the breathtaking vistas that await beyond the park gates. The air gets cooler, the scent of ponderosa pine intensifies, and anticipation builds with every passing mile as we approach one of America’s crown jewels of scenic preservation.

Leaving the cluster of hotels, shops, and the Grand Canyon Visitor Center in Tusayan behind, we merge onto AZ-64 northbound, also known as the Desert View Drive inside the park. The two-lane highway is well-paved and frequently traveled, but still offers moments of peaceful driving. We soon reach the South Entrance Station, where a ranger greets each car and checks for entrance passes. If you plan to explore multiple national parks in the region—like Petrified Forest, Zion, or Bryce Canyon—the America the Beautiful interagency pass is well worth the cost and can save time at the gate. At the time of filming, we skipped ahead past a roughly 7-minute wait here, though delays can vary significantly based on season and time of day.

Once cleared, the road winds gently through the dense Kaibab National Forest, where tall evergreens blanket the terrain. Occasional wildlife sightings—such as elk or mule deer—are common in this corridor, especially during the early morning and late afternoon hours. Several park access roads branch off toward campgrounds, visitor facilities, and shuttle loops, but we remain on AZ-64, heading toward the Grand Canyon Village. The elevation here hovers around 7,000 feet, and even during warmer months, the forest provides shade and a feeling of serenity, contrasting with the more exposed desert plateaus just south.

The final stretch delivers us to Parking Lot 1, one of the main access points for Grand Canyon Village and the iconic South Rim viewpoints. From here, it’s a short walk to the Rim Trail, Mather Point, or the Grand Canyon Visitor Center—each offering their own unforgettable introduction to the canyon’s grandeur. Whether you’re here for just a few hours or planning to hike into the depths below, the ease of access along AZ-64 makes this approach ideal for first-time visitors and returning adventurers alike.

In just a few miles, we’ve crossed a threshold—from a busy tourist hub into the quiet majesty of one of Earth’s most iconic landscapes. This stretch of AZ-64 may be brief, but it serves as a perfect overture: a transition zone where everyday concerns give way to the timeless immensity of rock, sky, and silence. As we park and step out, the canyon waits—not with fanfare, but with awe.
