Historic Route 66: McLean – Texas

Historic Route 66 - McLean - Texas | Drive America

Take a short but nostalgic cruise down Historic Route 66 as we pass through the small Texas Panhandle town of McLean. Our journey begins at Interstate 40 Exit 143, where the wide, open feel of the Texas plains gives way to a slower rhythm along the Mother Road. The pavement narrows and the hum of interstate travel fades behind us, replaced by the charm of a two-lane main street lined with brick-fronted buildings, weathered signs, and hints of a busier past. McLean once thrived as a service stop for cross-country travelers; now, the pace is gentler, but the character remains. The first blocks greet us with a mix of restored storefronts and fading facades, each telling its own story of boom years and quieter decades.

As we roll further into town, we approach one of McLean’s most photographed landmarks—the old Phillips 66 gas station. While it’s no longer a functioning service stop, its distinctive architecture, replica pumps, and bright painted windows recreate the look of a mid-20th-century fuel stop. Purists might note that this is more a piece of set design than a preserved original, but that doesn’t diminish its appeal. It stands as a reminder of the era when motels, diners, and gas stations were the lifelines of Route 66. A brief pause here offers a chance to imagine the rumble of classic cars pulling in for gas, the chime of the service bell, and travelers swapping road stories before heading on toward Amarillo or Oklahoma City.

Leaving the Phillips 66 behind, we continue westward along Route 66, passing through quiet residential stretches and glimpses of open prairie peeking between buildings. The road soon begins to angle toward the interstate, the modern highway running parallel in the distance. This final leg out of McLean shows the contrast between the slower, more intimate pace of Route 66 and the efficiency-driven flow of I-40. At Exit 141, we rejoin the interstate, bringing our brief but memorable detour to a close. The drive through McLean may be short in miles, but it’s rich in character—a snapshot of how the Mother Road lives on in small towns, preserved in both fact and spirit.

Historic Route 66 in McLean offers more than just a stretch of pavement—it’s a link between eras. Here, the past isn’t frozen so much as it’s staged, with a nod toward the travelers who shaped these towns and the new generations who still find joy in wandering off the interstate. Whether you’re chasing history, seeking a photo opportunity, or just curious about life on America’s most famous highway, McLean delivers a quick but worthwhile taste of 66’s enduring charm.
