Arkansas Highway 124: Rose Bud to Quitman

Travel with us along a peaceful stretch of rural Arkansas as we head westbound on Arkansas Highway 124 from the community of Rose Bud to the town of Quitman. This short 8-mile segment may not be one of the state’s most famous highways, but it delivers a scenic ride through the rolling farmlands and wooded hills that define White and Cleburne counties. Whether you’re a local traveler making the daily drive or a highway enthusiast checking out a lesser-known state route, this drive offers a charming look at small-town Arkansas life.

Our journey begins just west of downtown Rose Bud, where Arkansas Highway 124 splits off from the well-traveled Highway 36. Rose Bud itself is a quiet community, mostly residential with a few local businesses and schools clustered near the main road. Heading northwest on AR-124, the landscape quickly opens up to rural farmland. Patches of pastureland are dotted with small ponds and fenced livestock, alternating with clusters of pine and oak. Before long, we pass the junction with a segment of Arkansas Highway 107—one of several disjointed sections of that highway spread across the region.

As we continue northwest, the road gently curves through low hills, offering glimpses of the foothills that signal the transition from the Arkansas River Valley toward the Ozark fringe. The ride is smooth and lightly traveled, ideal for a casual cruise or a scenic detour. Approaching Quitman from the southeast, the landscape starts to shift again—wooded parcels become more frequent, and homes appear more closely spaced as we near town. Entering Quitman, AR-124 reaches its western terminus at the intersection with Arkansas Highway 25, right in the heart of town. This marks the end of our journey along this particular segment, but it also connects travelers to a wider network of highways serving northern Cleburne County.

While the route itself is relatively short, its simplicity is part of the appeal. It’s a connector road, sure—but it’s also a snapshot of what makes Arkansas driving so enjoyable: peaceful roads, natural beauty, and the occasional unexpected junction that invites you to explore further. For those looking to continue the drive, AR-25 offers options heading north toward Heber Springs or south back toward US Highway 65 and eventually Little Rock. Meanwhile, if you take AR-107 north at its earlier junction, you’ll find a backroad route into Heber Springs. Altogether, this short trip down Highway 124 is a quiet but essential part of Arkansas’s secondary highway network.
