One of the most unique drives in the Arkansas highway system isn’t a drive at all — it’s a ferry ride. Arkansas Highway 125 takes an unexpected detour across the waters of Bull Shoals Lake via the Peel Ferry, the last remaining public ferry operated by the Arkansas Department of Transportation. This one-mile crossing between the lake’s eastern and western shores isn’t just a functional connection — it’s a scenic experience that puts you right in the middle of the Ozarks’ natural beauty.
We begin our journey at the ferry landing near the community of Peel on the eastern shore of Bull Shoals Lake. This is where Highway 125 comes to a temporary pause, replaced by a slow-moving, free ferry that carries vehicles, passengers, and even the occasional motorcycle or RV across the lake. Once onboard, there’s nothing to do but relax and enjoy the peaceful ten-minute float across one of Arkansas’s most picturesque bodies of water. With no engine noise and minimal wake, the ferry glides past lush wooded hillsides, secluded inlets, and the open expanse of the lake’s northern arm. It’s not uncommon to spot birds overhead or fishermen along the shore, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
The west shore landing is nestled just below a small bluff, and from here, Highway 125 resumes its northward journey toward Missouri. A small park and scenic overlook sit near the top of the hill, providing a great spot to stretch your legs or take in the panoramic view of the lake you just crossed. Continuing north just a short distance, you’ll reach the Missouri state line — but for many travelers, it’s the ferry that makes this drive memorable, not the destination.
