Let’s take a short but charming cruise along Arkansas Highway 88 as it makes its way into the small town of Lonsdale, nestled in the foothills just west of Hot Springs National Park. We begin our drive by turning west onto AR-88 from U.S. Highway 70, just northeast of the community. This short segment of AR-88 serves as a local connector, bridging the faster-moving U.S. 70 with the quiet residential streets that make up the heart of Lonsdale.
As we roll westward, the scenery shifts quickly from roadside woods and occasional rural homes to a small-town atmosphere. Though the stretch is only about a mile long, it offers a snapshot of what life feels like in this corner of Garland County. If you glance to either side, you’ll see modest family homes, a scattering of small businesses, and a few community landmarks that remind us how tight-knit towns like Lonsdale keep their roots strong despite their size.
Our journey along Arkansas Highway 88 officially ends at the intersection with Strauss Road — a local road that eventually ties into Arkansas Highway 171 just a few miles to the south, offering travelers another back route toward Lake Catherine and Diamondhead. But for the purpose of this ride, we follow Cockrill Street westward for a few more blocks, cruising through the heart of Lonsdale before easing off the gas and concluding our short visit just as the town fades back into rural countryside. It’s a brief jaunt, but it’s one more mile that stitches together the back roads of Arkansas, and sometimes those are the miles we remember best.
