If you’re in the mood for a quick yet memorable jaunt through the rolling hills and woodlands of southwest Missouri, this stretch along Missouri Supplemental Route E from Big M to Eagle Rock is a fantastic choice. Let’s cruise westward together for about 5 miles and discover not just the roadway, but also a few of the Ozarks’ best-kept secrets hiding just off the pavement.
We kick things off in the small community of Big M, nestled on the eastern shore of Table Rock Lake. This spot is well-loved by anglers and campers alike, thanks to the Big M Campground and Marina just a stone’s throw from the start of Route E. As we set out west, Route E wastes no time diving into the heart of the Ozark countryside — think thick forests, rolling ridges, and an abundance of wildlife, especially deer and wild turkeys that sometimes make cameo appearances along the roadside.
The route itself is classic Missouri two-lane: twisty, undulating, and rarely boring. For the first couple of miles, you’re hemmed in by the Mark Twain National Forest, which means lush greenery in spring and summer, fiery color in fall, and peaceful solitude year-round. If you’re into outdoor adventures, keep an eye out for the many side roads that lead to hiking trails, lake access points, and scenic overlooks. The area is especially popular with boaters and fishermen due to the proximity of Table Rock Lake’s coves.
As we roll further west, the scenery transitions from thick woods to more open stretches, with the occasional glimpse of sparkling lake water peeking through the trees. You’ll also notice a scattering of lake cabins and rural homes, giving the whole route a relaxed, vacation vibe. There aren’t any major towns between Big M and Eagle Rock, but that’s kind of the point — it’s a drive for those who want to unplug and soak in a bit of old-school Ozarks tranquility.
Our trip wraps up as we enter Eagle Rock, a friendly lakeside community known for its marina, parks, and access to both Table Rock Lake and the White River arm. If you’ve got time, make a stop at the Eagle Rock Campground, or swing by the Eagle Rock–Golden–Mano Fire Department for a glimpse of small-town life. And if you’re hungry or need to top off the tank, Eagle Rock offers a few classic roadside spots before you connect with Missouri Route 86 and continue your journey into the Missouri countryside.
